I always look out for beauty and benefit in a role: Surveen Chawla

I always look out for beauty and benefit in a role: Surveen Chawla
Surveen Chawla
With 2014's first big blockbuster 'Disco Singh' set to hit cinemas 11th April, caught up with lead actress Surveen Chawla to talk about the film & her career! Surveen Chawla who we have seen on small screen as Charu in 'Kahin To Hoga' to Kasak in 'Kasautii Zindagi Kay' has moved onto the big screen. The pretty actress has starred in Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and of course Punjabi films, with her latest being Disco Singh starring alongside Diljit Dosanjh.

What is your character all about in Disco Singh and how different is it from your previous ones?
I play a successful model named Sweety. Diljit who plays Laatu has been in awe of her. Sweety belongs to the world of glamour, yet is very realistic, her dreams are as real and hence she falls for the innocence in the love of an unestablished aspiring singer who is Laatu. This in itself clearly justifies what she demands out of life! I have tried to play her with a sense of calm and composure which I hope gets conveyed to the audiences, this is what makes Sweety unique, so far she has been more close to life as any other character in the script.

How different or similar are you from the character in reality?
I think one will always be able to draw one or more similarities from every character that you play or are written. Emotions and traits are the same but you only find them differently in various permutations and combinations in different individuals, hence everyone tries to draw some parallel from their real life to create a character.

What made you sign up to Disco Singh, what attracted you towards the film?
To be brutally honest when I select a project I tend to look out for at least one of these 3 parameters: Beauty/Good/Benefit. This one was simple since it had all 3, may be more. The script was fun to read, as well as my role, Anurag Singh ,Diljit Dosanjh, and PTC Motion Pictures....and that's it!! Hahaha....can one ask for more???

What has it been like working alongside your co-artist?
Well Diljit is one hell of a spontaneous actor very inspiring, committed and a lot of fun it was absolutely amazing working with him. Initially he was a bit reserved, but I guess over time he opened up...he he ....lol...he's got a great energy to him.

How do you find doing a comedy film?
Well in Punjabi um I am pretty used to it. Even though it feels a little over the top sometimes butyou've got to cater to the demands of an audience, if this is what they like, you give it to them. But honestly speaking Comedy is the toughest genre to make or act out it is tough to make people laugh without trying too hard and Anurag does it seamlessly with Disco Singh!

What was the best moment within the process of making this film?
Oh God! I always find it impossible to choose. One of them was Diljit's birthday I guess and how we teamed up together and schemed to put cake on Anurag's face instead. We couldn't cake Diljit as he still had to shoot for a few more hours and we couldn't spoil his make up or his clothes. Also the funniest part was how we did a countdown with Anurag, only for a picture with the cake in our hands which he could see and yet couldn't anticipate it coming right onto his face!!! Film sets I tell u...it makes memories for life!

What was the challenging scene within the film?
There was a couple of them, one in particular was the proposal scene and one where I almost broke Laatu's heart. Both scenes were very much layered.

What is the one thing that you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor?
I always feel as to how I can better myself as an actor; push myself beyond boundaries and in comfort zones. But I've just recently realised that there is nothing known as "better actor", you've only got to be a "true actor". Be right here, right now in this very moment and for yourself. Also it is about being true to your character, rather allowing the character to play you instead of you playing it...wish I knew this before!!

If you could choose, what two actors would you really want to work with and why?
Ranbir Kapoor and Shahrukh Khan, one is a brilliant actor and the other a brilliant star! Want to experience both.

Why should the audience watch 'Disco Singh'?
Well like I said before, there is every reason for you to go and watch Disco Singh because it meets all the parameters to be a great film it is an entertaining product, which is fun to watch also it is PTC motion picture's first film. They are a whole bunch of very enthusiastic people who have put this together. Anurag and all of us in the team have worked very hard on it, only to entertain our fans and the audiences to go to the theatres and come out smiling. Hopefully it should be worth the money spent. Not forgetting the music is excellent by Jatinder Shah which completes the package and gives this comedy a great punch!! Hope you all enjoy the film which comes out April 11th.

Gippy Grewal-Badshah collaboration 'Bad Baby' to be out soon

Gippy Grewal-Badshah collaboration 'Bad Baby' to be out soon
Bad Baby

Badshah has collaborated with Gippy Grewal for his first single titled 'Bad Baby' coming off his debut album One.

The track is due to be released soon - "Its for the first time Gippy Grewal has sung in Hindi. The video will be made by a well known choreographer from Bollywood. When it comes to established artists like Mr. Grewal, I always like to experiment and try to bring out something different from whats been done before. I did the same in case of Proper Patola (see video below), I have done the same in case of Bad Baby.
This song is not a typical Gippy Grewal genre song, but at the same time I knew he could pull it of and hes done a wonderful job!"

Disco Singh Punjabi Movie Watch Review

Disco Singh Movie Review|Disco Singh

DISCO SINGH
Critic's Rating:
Cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Surveen Chawla, Apporva Arora, Manoj Pahwa, BN Sharma, Karamjit Anmol and Chandan Prabhakar
Direction: Anurag Singh
Genre: Comedy
Avg Readers Rating:

Story: Disco Singh is the story of an orchestra proprietor Latu Singh (Diljit Dosanjh), a struggling singer from a humble background. He longs for Sweety (Surveen Chawla) who is a model but the stark difference in their lifestyles keeps his longing limited to just his dreams. Things turn around when he is asked to fake a relationship with the girl of his dreams at gunpoint from the don of the city played by Manoj Pahwa.

Review: Disco Singh is the third film of the blockbuster combo of director Anurag Singh and actor Diljit Dosanjh. Earlier they have come together in the 'Jatt & Juliet' series and have gained a lot of acclaim as well as appreciation. Here comes a film which has everything going in it's favour but except for one thing. It has a great star cast, superb director, a big production house but sadly it doesn't have a great story which is worthy of being made into a feature film.

Director Anurag Singh also happens to be the writer of this film. Having written 'Yaar Anmulle' earlier and also co-written the 'Jatt & Juliet' series one expects his writing to be water tight but alas it's not! The writing starts to fall flat after the initial twenty minutes. Also there was so much in the plot which was completely unwanted and had it been not there the film could have been shaped in a much better way. Dialogues have been written by Anurag Singh and Amberdeep Singh who had a successful outing with Jatt & Juliet 2 together and they continue the same momentum here but it was not as impressive as their earlier collaboration.

Now comes Anurag Singh, the director. He once again excels as a director. He is one half of the soul of the film, other half obviously being Diljit. He handles some crunch moments with ease as he is used to doing it. Also his DOP, Anshul Choubey raises the bar of his work once again. It was probably the first time a Punjabi film was being shot in Delhi and yes he's shown us some stunning visuals of the capital and challenges the work of some of the finest DOP's of Bollywood who have shot films in Delhi.

Music was by Jatinder Shah and this time it was an average affair. No doubt that the songs are peppy but they will all blow away with the wind and are not here to stay for a longer period of time but some of them were able to gather the momentum in the pre-release period like Diljit's Happy Birthday is the best song of the lot followed by Kamal Khan's Sad number Faislet and Sweetu, again by Diljit.

Now coming to the performances. Diljit Dosanjh excels yet again. This time he is playing Lattu Singh and not Fateh Singh. But frankly, most of his antics remind the viewer again and again of the memorable Fateh Singh and somehow make you feel that it was just another extension of what else Fateh can do. But as i told earlier, he is another half of the soul of the film alongside Anurag Singh. However, now it's the need of the hour that Diljit does something different from his regular gimmicks just like his contemporaries are doing. Surveen Chawla looks looks hot in this one and by far the best role she has done in her career. Cheers to her styling team for having done some great work with her costumes. As an actor, she seems to have grown an extra mile from her last release.

Now the supporting cast was headed by Manoj Pahwa, but one feels that he is getting repetitive when it comes to his choice of roles in Punjabi films. He's had 3 released and in all of them he's played the role of a Funny Gangster. But by far, this is the best role out of the all 3 roles he's done. He faced some problems with his Punjabi accent but his acting makes up for that. The show stealer in this supporting cast was BN Sharma. This is not the first time that he has excelled but in this film he did a great job where he plays a feminist character. His facial expressions are noteworthy of a praise. Karamjit Anmol and Chandan Prabhakar get limited scope and are time pass. For Upasna Singh, it was yet another Comedy Nights but here it was not with Kapil and also for a chance, she was married! Newcomer Apporva Arora was a good pick for the role she played but her role lacked the meat.

Overall, Disco Singh is not something what you have never seen before. Go with minimal expectations unlike me and who knows you might end up having some fun at least. Also 'Diljit the Superman', gets very limited scope in the film.

I feel like God's special child: Parul Gulati

I feel like God's special child: Parul Gulati
Parul Gulati
Even as she dismisses it nonchalantly, Parul Gulati's timing to enter the film industry turned classy. She prefers to spread it pretty unembellished as she shrugs, "I just got spotted. It isn't something I aimed or struggled for. It just happened. I often call myself God's special child because I just forayed into this field with much ease."

A car commercial was Parul's first break and since then she's been unstoppable. "Since always I was in awe of actors. And I was under this impression that they get to look good at all times. But the entire delusion was shaken the moment I joined this field. I mean, it is not child's play. It's not just glitz and glamour that marks this field. The amount of hard work that goes into making a film is immense."

Born a Ludhianvi, Parul has spent a major part of her life in Punjab instilling Punjabi confidence galore in her. Her everyday life talks of upcoming Punjabi films...bags full as Parul has the underproduction Zoravar opposite Honey Singh. Her recent venture Romeo Ranjha opposite Garry Sandhu along with Jazzy B, slated for release soon, is becoming a talked about film already. As she opened up about the film, Parul said, "The film is a pot-pourri of action and romance. It's a con-comedy. The entire shoot was really energetic. Especially Garry is quite naughty on the sets but he's really sweet. Jazzy B is also a great actor."

As rumour mills are abuzz with Romeo Ranjha being a rip off of the Dhoom trilogy, Parul distances herself from them. She adds, "It is an all boys film but that has nothing to do with Dhoom. There is not even a slight resemblance to it. Except the fact that we share the same action director, Alan Amin, there is no other connection."

Shah Rukh's kids watch us: JusReign and Rupan Bal

Shah Rukh's kids watch us: JusReign and Rupan Bal
JusReign and Rupan Bal
While every comedian is trying to get a laugh, this duo is trying to drive sense into those laughs. Just three years after this Canadian-Punjabi Indian duo started creating videos of their comic acts and uploading on YouTube, JusReign and Rupan Bal have grabbed eyeballs of those who matter in this industry. While Rupan has already made his acting debut with Harbhajan Mann's Punjabi film Hanni, this time around his friend JusReign is also off to a start. And it all started with the social media. Back in Canada, JusReign produced online comic videos while Rupan became his actor, taking on different garbs to make their satirical comedy appeal to the largest population, the online viewer.

JusReign became a popular YouTuber, while coaxing his friend Rupan to test his skills in the Punjabi industry back home in India. As luck would have it, now the two have been cast together in an underproduction Punjabi film, 22G Tussi Ghaint Ho! . In Chandigarh recently, we caught up with the duo and bring you some nuggets from the conversation.

JUS TALKING JusReign, christened Jasmeet Singh at birth, explains how he accepted this film. "The role was little bit of me, where I play a Canadian. It allowed me to explain myself, my North American style of humour," he says, "I always tried to promote my roots, keeping my beard and turban on...and used comedy to break the discrimination abroad. I also came here because this is where I come from, I wanted to recreate something new, innovative and different for the people here, with my kind of humour." Since he is particular about not bending his personal rules just to 'fit in', Jus is open to directing his own projects. "If I don't find anything here that suits my comic timing," he adds, "I am very picky. I do comedy for the art form than doing it for the money... I like to add value. Like good music is cherished till long after, I want to create humour that will be remembered till much later." Referring to his style as "more situational, sarcastic, having depth," Jus sees hope on the Indian media horizon. "Though I think the change from slapstick to profound humour hasn't happened in India yet, I see it starting with YouTube." Though Jus doesn't subscribe to most of surging Indian TV comedy, he adds, "I like Kapil Sharma, his humour is very snappy. I would like to be on his show someday, even if I may not get all the jokes all the time because of the culture barrier."
Currently working on a comedy album slated for a commercial release, Jus is also toying with the idea of making his own Bollywood film to sample his style of humour here. And to quell any scepticism about takers for his comic timing, Jus says, "Shah Rukh Khan's kids watch YouTube and they watch us..."

BAL IN HIS COURT Rupan Bal has a dangerous plan B, but that doesn't mean he has little faith in his plan A panning out as visualised. "I pursued a degree in Criminology to please my parents. But my plan A was to become myself, to become Rupan Bal," he says. Pleased with the offer of a role for him here subsequent to Hanni, Rupan plays a desi pendu in 22G....
With Jus being instrumental in pushing Rupan to India, he is glad. "Jus spotted the talent in me and kind of pulled me here," says Rupan, going on to narrate his introduction to Pollywood, "Hanni was a total surprise because I never planned on becoming an actor. In fact, when I got a call from the Mann's I thought it's a prank call and called back to even ascertain the number! But eventually through a mutual fb friend of Harbhajan Mann, I got confirmation of the offer." While he is here to catch the boom in the Punjabi industry, the actor has many favourites. "Well, my favourite is JusReign first! Then, I think Akshay Kumar does great comedy even if its cliched. In Punjab, we've grown up on comedy by Gurpreet Ghuggi and Bhagwant Mann." Though he forayed into Punjabi, Rupan doesn't think Bollywood is far from reach. "There is a huge world of opportunities in Bollywood now. And we are hopeful."
Meanwhile, Rupan also has an Indo-Canadian project at hand. "I am working on an English film, it is by the international film fest people in Canada and is story of two generations."

DIRECTOR'S TAKE Making his debut in Punjabi feature films, the director of 22G Tussi Ghaint Ho!, which also stars Bhagwant Mann, Vishal Prashar is a new age kid on the directorial block. Enamoured by technology and its application in entertainment, Vishal has created his niche in the 3D and VFX industry already. Having graduated from a Vancouver film school, Vishal got a taste of JusReign and Rupan comedy in Canada. "I had been following JusReign since two years now. So, when I thought of making a comedy, I had to cast them," he says. Defending his take on making yet another comedy amidst the clutter of gags, Vishal says, "This film offers new kind of humour in Punjabi industry. It is intelligent humour. The story is by Bhagwant Mann and he is known for intelligent comedy. Unlike stereotypical comedy, ours isn't a drag and it doesn't overlap things. So, it's like a chaat- a mixture." The film also casts Upasna Singh. "She is doing pretty well right now, courtesy Kapil's show. While Bhagwant saab is very big abroad, and the social media too has got him covered."

1984 Punjab to release on 27th June
Still from 1984 Punjab
Described by Diljit Dosanjh as his 'dream project' the movie once again brings together Diljit Dosanjh with director Anurag Singh & Gunbir Singh Sandhu, the trio whom worked on the record breaking Jatt & Juliet series.

Near the holy city of Amritsar, barely a kilometer from the Indo-Pak border, a small village stands like an orphaned child scared of the world around him. The village is called Narli. Every morning, at day break, a lonely old woman leaves her house and travels all the way to the distant town of Bhikhiwind. Once there, she spends the whole day just sitting quietly outside the main police station. She has been following this routine for every single day of the last one year.

Her name is Satwant Kaur and she is searching for her son who went out to work in the fields one day and never returned. Her search takes her on a journey across many villages and towns as she tries to discover her son's fate. It is a journey full of pain, sadness, hope and tragedy. It is a journey that so many mothers across Punjab have undertaken.

It is the journey of all of us. It is the journey of Punjab and eventually, it is the journey of all humanity.
